“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Jeremiah 17:7-8

When you walk in Christian circles, and are heavily involved in church activities it is very easy to get wrapped up in so much of the doing, without developing an intimate and very PERSONAL relationship with God. We quote so many scriptures and “Christian phrases” but do we even remember them, and stand upon them during the testing times?

As I grow, I am realising more and more how important it is for my relationship with Christ to be authentic and not synthetic. This can be a challenge at times because it is very easy to fall into the trap of being consumed with getting things done on the surface.

Can you imagine? If you truly thought that you had faith, and that you trusted in God, only to be hit so hard with a life circumstance, and realise that you actually had/have very little faith? That the rock that you thought you stood on was actually sinking sand- and it was making you sink very quickly?

It’s a very frightening place to be, and the Lord has been drawing my attention to the fact that my confidence needs to centered on Him ONLY.

I need to trust in Him.

I have gone through many phases where I placed my confidence in guys, in myself, in my education, in my job, in money, my car and many other transient things.

There wasn’t room for God. It’s only when this conviction came upon me that I realised that I wasn’t truly going through the stretching yet amazing process of becoming rooted in Christ. I was just spraying Him on as a perfume so I would look good to others and feel good about myself.

This scripture teaches us that to rely on God wholeheartedly, and place all of our strength in Him means that we have a supremely high expectation and confidence in His ability to comfort us, shield us and lead us (ON HIS OWN) in life. Blessed is anyone who has this confident trust in the Lord because it speaks of an unshakable faith that roots you into the wellspring of life. Your entire hope is in Him. Literally if you do not have Him as the rock to stand upon you are finished.

I jotted down some thoughts on what it means to trust in the Lord:

  • To surrender your own strength to Him

  • To have an incredible expectation and hope in His ability

  • To place all your confidence in Him- letting go of yourself, and letting Him take over

  • No arguing or negotiating with Him!

  • An abandonment of all your desires and pursuits in order that He may be permitted to lead

  • Placing your security in God

  • (As long as you are submitted) to be persuaded that no matter what you experience in life,  God is carrying you through it, and will carry you out of it- for His glory

  • Trust is an intimate thing that suggests that you know someone so well that you can be assured that they will always come through for you

  • A great spiritual believe that births a content, grateful and thankful heart

  • An infinite patience and joy in the Lord regardless of outward/inward circumstances

  • Being fearless in the Lord.

  • Consistently drawing nourishment from His never-ending wellspring of life.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.

Not being able to trust the Lord and not being able to be confident in Him is a frustrating and frightening place to be. Your intrinsic behaviour is to either trust in yourself, or in “props” such as a house, money, another person (spouse, family member, friend, pastor) your job and other physical crutches. The Bible says that those who come unto God must first BELIEVE that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Placing your trust in even yourself is even more frightening! I have often heard the phrase “Trust only in yourself- you can’t trust in anyone” and whilst it may be true that you shouldn’t place your trust in anyone, you must make sure to place it in God.

Even if you think you will never let yourself down, there will come a time where you will- when the harsh winds of this life start blowing and you realise that you have been backed into a corner, and cannot stand or see your way through.

What props have you built up and what are you leaning on?

With love,
